The vehicle had been placed on drive-up ramps prior to the inspector's arrival. No
repairs or disassembly had been started prior to this inspection.
Details of inspection and test(s) performed:
A visual inspection of body and suspension revealed extensive rust and corrosion on
the undercarriage and suspension components. The front and rear cross-members
portions of the frame were severely rusted and the inspector noted the structural
integrity of the vehicle was compromised as a result of these severely rusted parts.
The front and rear suspension struts were severely rusted while the sway bars, control
arms and all of the attaching hardware showed heavy surface rust. The rubber
suspension bushings were all dry-rotted and they had started to deteriorate. All of the
suspension bolt heads were severely rusted and were no longer serviceable with
conventional tools. The transmission cooler, brake and power steering lines showed
heavy surface rust. The left and right inner rocker panels were rusted adjacent to their
respective drain holes. There was rust blistering on the left rear quarter panel under
previous body repairs adjacent to the wheel opening. The left front corner of the
sunroof had grind marks indicating previous repairs and the visible grind marks also
indicate substandard workmanship. The entire rear half of subject vehicle had been
previously refinished and the work was not within industry standards evidenced by
the tape lines in both rear door jambs, the orange peel visible in the paint on the left
quarter panel and there were also runs visible in the clear coat. The fuel fill neck was
severely rusted and corroded. The inspector verified the throttle was sticking and after
the engine was started it idled at approximately 3000 RPM at all times. All of the
visible aluminum components in engine compartment showed corrosion.
Cause of Failure/Conclusion:
The excessive and abnormal amounts of rust and corrosion were noted on the above
listed vehicle’s undercarriage and suspension components. The previous body, rust
and refinishing repairs referenced above were substandard and would not be
considered acceptable or within industry standards
